Marijuana Addiction Treatment & Rehab

Marijuana Rehab in California

Marijuana is legal in California and many other states. However, the legality of the drug does not mean that you can’t get addicted. Much like alcohol, it’s possible to develop an addiction to marijuana. When this happens, it can seriously impact all aspects of a person’s life. For example, finances, interpersonal relationships, work, mental health, and physical well-being. If you’re looking for marijuana rehab in California, Align Recovery Centers is here to help. We provide personalized, integrated care for addiction, covered by most insurance plans.

The Need for Marijuana Rehab in California

In California, there were 98,422 cannabis abuse, dependence, and use-related hospitalizations in 2023. Nearly half were among residents aged 15-35. This statistic alone is enough to illustrate the need for marijuana rehab in California. Anyone who uses marijuana can be affected. Knowing the signs–and understanding that help is available–is crucial.

What is Marijuana Addiction?

What is marijuana addiction? About three in 10 people who use marijuana develop cannabis use disorder, another name for marijuana addiction. People with cannabis use disorder may experience signs and symptoms, including but not limited to the following. Looking out for these may help you identify addiction in yourself or someone else.

  • Using more cannabis than intended.
  • Trying but failing to stop or reduce the amount you use.
  • Continued use of cannabis, even if it causes problems at work, home, or school.
  • Continued use of cannabis, even if it causes problems in interpersonal relationships.
  • Continued use of cannabis despite new or worsened physical or mental health problems.
  • Spending less time on significant activities (e.g., hobbies) in favor of using cannabis.
  • Using cannabis in high-risk situations (e.g., driving while under the influence).
  • Needing to use larger amounts of cannabis to get high.
  • Spending a lot of time using cannabis.

You don’t need to have every sign of cannabis use disorder to meet the criteria for the condition. Just two symptoms are enough for a diagnosis. Although some people are at a greater risk than others, any person who uses marijuana can develop addiction.

We provide marijuana addiction treatment in a tranquil environment. Align offers a variety of different programs so that clients can opt into the one(s) that speak to them most.

Inpatient

Our 30-day residential inpatient program provides highly structured therapy for marijuana addiction and other substance use disorders in a tranquil environment. People in our inpatient treatment at Align start the day with breakfast at 8:00 AM, followed by:

  • 5-7 groups per day. Beginning at 9:00 AM, clients participate in groups and group therapy sessions. Groups vary in type. Some cover heavier topics, whereas others are more lighthearted.
  • Individual therapy. Weekly individual therapy sessions help you focus on personal goals and give you a place to talk about things you might want to share in a group setting.
  • Family therapy. Typically held once per week, family therapy is strongly recommended when possible.
  • Outings. We take clients on 3-5 outings per week, including wellness walks around the neighborhood, one fun activity, and two 12-step meetings.

We use a blend of evidence-based treatments, holistic therapies, and lifestyle, tailored to the needs of the individual.

Partial Hospitalization Program

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Align is the next step down from residential care, but the same effective approach is used. PHP clients come to our center for therapy during the day but sleep and live at home or nearby in sober housing. Some people transition to our PHP after completing residential treatment to ease the transition back to typical everyday life. Others participate in PHP as an alternative to residential care.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

There’s a strong link between problematic marijuana use and mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many people facing cannabis use disorder have one or more additional mental health conditions. When that is true, addressing both matters. An essential part of our whole-person approach, Align provides dual-diagnosis treatment in Northern California for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Virtual Care

In addition to our in-person recovery programs, Align is proud to offer virtual care. Options include but aren’t limited to a fully virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP), weekly family dynamics meeting held over Zoom for loved ones, virtual therapy sessions, and aftercare. Virtual sessions make it possible for people and their loved ones to get treatment and support, no matter where they are.

Aftercare for Life

One of the things that makes Align so unique? We provide free aftercare for life. Our alumni program offers resources such as our alumni app, an ongoing Zoom meeting for former clients, check-ins with staff members, and group sharing.

How does marijuana affect the brain?

Using marijuana has an immediate impact on thinking, coordination, movement, and memory. It can affect brain development, which can be particularly harmful to younger users.

Marijuana is often smoked. This can cause lung tissue damage, scarring, and harm to small blood vessels. While smoking cannabis is linked to a greater risk of coughing, bronchitis, and mucus production, these symptoms usually improve in people who quit.

Some people experience withdrawal symptoms when they first stop using cannabis. For example, individuals report irritability, insomnia, reduced appetite, changes in mood, marijuana cravings, and vivid or disturbing teams. Though they are not typically dangerous, these can be difficult to manage on your own. Align is here to help you get through cannabis withdrawal symptoms.

Evidence-based treatments used at Align Recovery, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), have been proven effective for cannabis dependency
