Prescription Drug Detox Program in CA

The detox program at Align Recovery Centers helps treat clients experiencing addiction to prescription drugs. Prescription drugs can include opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and polysubstance use (the use of two or more substances).

Medically assisted detox includes 24/7 medical monitoring, psychiatric oversight, and medication management. Individually tailored programs help reduce withdrawal symptoms while addressing co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic stress.

A Supportive Place to Begin Recovery

We believe that detox shouldn’t feel like clients are being “processed through a system.” Instead, we see detox as an opportunity to build a stable foundation before rebuilding a home. We offer our clients a range of therapeutic modalities, allowing them to focus on the ones that resonate the most with them.

Our philosophy is that addiction is often an expression of co‑occurring conditions. We treat the underlying issues of substance use disorder to address the root cause of addiction and support lasting sobriety.

What to Expect During Prescription Drug Detox

The daily schedule in our detox program provides a continuous rhythm, structure, and consistency during the detox process. This structure helps set clients up for success as they transition into residential treatment.

After breakfast at 8 AM, clients take part in morning group therapy focused on goal setting. They also receive regular medication check-ins to monitor and manage any prescription drug withdrawal symptoms and receive necessary nursing support.

Therapy & Recovery Work Throughout the Day

There are 5 to 7 groups that meet throughout each day, in addition to a lunch at 12 PM. Mid‑day intensive therapies include CBT, DBT, Conscious Recovery, and trauma work. These therapies address the root causes of addiction and help prevent relapse.

Experiential therapies are held in the afternoon, including art, music, yoga, and Qigong. Clients also have access to individual therapy, trauma-focused discussions, and psychoeducation. Experiential therapies can help clients identify triggers, manage cravings, and learn coping strategies.

Evenings Encourage Reflection & Connection

The evening schedule includes dinner at 5 PM, followed by time for clients to process. It’s also a chance to reflect on the day, or just an opportunity for quiet time. Peer support is central to recovery – clients are paired with mentors who have firsthand experience navigating the challenges of recovery.

Treatment Options & Conditions Addressed

Prescription drug treatment plans include medically assisted detox, residential/inpatient programs, and various outpatient levels of care.

Benzodiazepine Detox

Sudden withdrawal from benzodiazepine use can be dangerous. Those going through benzodiazepine detox can experience withdrawal syndrome. Symptoms include sleep disturbance, anxiety, tremors, nausea, palpitations, muscle pain, and seizures.

It is highly recommended that benzodiazepine withdrawal be completed under the care of medical professionals in an accredited treatment center who can provide an appropriate benzodiazepine tapering plan. Detox from benzos such as Xanax and Valium must be done slowly and deliberately to avoid life-threatening symptoms.

Opioid Detox & Opioid Withdrawal Support

Symptoms of opioid withdrawal can be severe and, in rare cases, life-threatening. Getting the support needed through prescription drug detox allows clients to manage opioid use disorder symptoms in a safe, comfortable environment under the supervision of medically trained professionals. MAT is a central part of safe opioid withdrawal

Alcohol & Polysubstance Detox

We also offer alcohol detox programs that address polysubstance use disorder, when two or more substances are abused. Detox for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and polysubstance abuse is managed by a professional care team of nurses, physicians, behavioral health specialists, case managers, and licensed therapists. Medically assisted detox manages symptoms and prepares clients for the transition to residential care.

Dual Diagnosis Support

We believe that a substance abuse problem rarely exists without an underlying cause. Our dual diagnosis treatment program addresses co-occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and chronic stress. Dual diagnosis programs provide clients with a comprehensive and integrated treatment approach.

Stimulant & Prescription ADHD Medication Detox

Prescription stimulants, such as Adderall and Ritalin, are used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, while improving the ability to focus, maintain attention, and control impulsive behavior. As a central nervous system stimulant, prescription ADHD medications affect the brain’s reward centers, which means they can be highly addictive.

We treat individuals with a physical dependence on stimulants like Adderall just as we do other prescription drugs – our detox program provides medical supervision and vital sign checks. While there are no FDA-approved medications used to specifically treat stimulant addiction, several medications can be used to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety.

When to Seek Help for Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drug misuse isn’t always apparent and can often develop gradually. Many people begin taking medications exactly as prescribed before noticing growing dependence, cravings, or withdrawal symptoms.

Signs It May Be Time for Professional Detox

Symptoms of a prescription drug addiction, which point to the need for interventions or getting professional help, are as follows:

  • Increasing dosage without approval
  • Mixing substances
  • Cravings between doses
  • Muscle aches or flu-like symptoms without medication
  • Difficulty stopping despite consequences
  • Drug use affecting work or relationships
  • Fear of withdrawal symptoms
  • Prior relapse after attempting detox alone

Seeking professional help early reduces the medical risks associated with prescription drug detox and fosters long-term recovery.

Continued Support for Long-Term Recovery

Our team provides ongoing support designed to help clients maintain stability and rebuild their lives after treatment.

Family Support & Education

Family support and education focus on helping clients and their loved ones connect and work on rebuilding trust.

Our weekly virtual family dynamics group takes place on Wednesday evenings and includes education about treatment terms concerning levels of care. These include SLE (sober living environment), IOP (intensive outpatient program), and PHP (partial hospitalization program), along with how best to support a loved one.

We also offer virtual and in-person couples and family therapy sessions, which begin after week two if desired.

Medication Management During & After Detox

During medication-assisted treatment (MAT), common medications used include Suboxone and benzodiazepines (ex., lorazepam/Ativan). Other medications consist of Gabapentin, Methocarbamol for muscle pain, hydroxyzine for anxiety, clonidine for blood pressure, and ondansetron/Zofran for nausea.

Our opioid‑specific approach to detox uses an N‑Acetyl L‑Cysteine supplement and Lucemyra (lofexidine) prescription medication. This medication is administered early to reduce the withdrawal risk before initiating Suboxone (to avoid precipitated withdrawal).

Discharge Planning & Continuum of Care

Day one of treatment includes discharge planning, which continues through both detox and residential programs. Planning includes referrals for clients to continue along the continuum of care, including PHP, IOP, SLE, outpatient therapy, and additional counseling and alumni group services.

Medication support also continues during residential care. Clients leave with a limited 15-30-day supply of medication, along with referrals for ongoing prescriptions to be completed by a primary care provider.

Support for Professionals & Working Adults

Our 45-bed treatment facility, located in Sonoma, California, accepts adults 18+. The majority of our clients are adults aged 35 to 55 who are primarily insured professionals in the Greater Bay Area and blue‑collar owners and employees. However, all adults are welcome in our treatment programs.

Our family-style treatment center offers personalized, integrated care that includes gender‑specific processing when needed, while remaining LGBTQ+ affirming for all clients.

FAQs

How long does prescription drug detox last?

On-site medically assisted detox at Align Recovery typically lasts 6 to 7 days, with 7 days preferred for taper and recovery. During this time, staffing includes 24/7 nursing and health care, as well as medical oversight by board‑certified specialists.

Medical detox is highly recommended for drug abuse and dependence on benzodiazepines and opioids to manage often severe withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping the use of benzodiazepines can cause life-threatening complications, including seizures. For this reason, it is even more important to reach out to an accredited treatment center for detox assistance.

Align Recovery Centers is a fully accredited and licensed behavioral health facility. Our number one priority is to treat substance use as an expression of co-occurring diagnoses by addressing underlying core issues of addiction.

Common medications used in detox include Suboxone for opioid withdrawal and benzodiazepines, such as lorazepam/Ativan, for alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal. Other medications may include Gabapentin, Methocarbamol (muscle pain), hydroxyzine (anxiety), clonidine (blood pressure), and ondansetron/Zofran (nausea).

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines the use of FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies. MAT is currently used to treat opioid use disorder, including addiction to heroin, fentanyl, and oxycodone, and alcohol use disorder.

Yes, our 7-day detox program manages withdrawal symptoms for physical stabilization, helping clients transition to further treatment in our residential program. In residential treatment, clients work on addressing the root cause of addiction and relapse prevention strategies to successfully continue their recovery journey once treatment is complete.

Yes, Align Recovery accepts most major PPO commercial insurance plans for medical care received for prescription drug detox. Contact our admissions team to verify your insurance today.
