Comprehensive Treatment for Benzo Addiction

Our dedicated treatment center accepts individuals 18+ (with our major demographic including adults aged 35 to 55) experiencing substance use disorder (SUD). We specialize in treating benzodiazepine addiction as part of a comprehensive program.

Our team integrates evidence-based therapies with holistic interventions to address the complex challenges of addiction. We provide a full continuum of care that includes medical detox, residential drug rehabilitation, and dual diagnosis support, as well as recovery maintenance.

Our experienced professional staff recognizes the multifaceted physical and emotional implications of benzodiazepine addiction. Our focus on personalized, integrated care extends beyond symptom management, aiming to equip individuals with the tools to regain control of their lives and achieve lasting sobriety.

A Supportive, Family-Style Treatment Environment

Our mission encompasses a non-institutional approach to healing in an upscale, peaceful setting in Northern California, situated in a historic stone building on nearly 2 acres in beautiful Sonoma County. Our facilities include a large backyard, a library, a recreation room, and private, quiet spaces. The culture at our facility centers around a “mom‑and‑pop,” family-oriented vibe that includes a punitive milestone celebration for clients.

What Makes Our Approach to Addiction Treatment Different

Align Recovery Centers provides evidence-based addiction treatment in a structured, family-style environment designed to support long-term recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. We expose clients to a range of recovery modalities and let them choose what resonates best.

Trauma-Informed, Therapy-Forward
Care

Effective treatment for long-term use of benzodiazepines focuses on the underlying mental health factors contributing to substance use disorder, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and other co-occurring disorders.

Medically Supported Detox and Residential Treatment

Clients have access to medically supervised detox, residential programs, medication-assisted treatment, and ongoing clinical support throughout the recovery process.

Recovery Planning Beyond Residential Treatment

Discharge and aftercare planning begin early in treatment to help clients transition into appropriate next steps, including sober living, outpatient treatment, continued therapy, and community-based recovery support.

Family Involvement and Recovery Education

Recovery often impacts the entire family system. We offer family education, clinician-supported visitation, and couples or family therapy sessions to help strengthen communication and long-term support. Part of our recovery education includes a belief that relapse does not equal a restart at zero.

Flexible Recovery Pathways

Clients are introduced to multiple personalized recovery approaches, including 12-Step support, SMART Recovery, and Recovery Dharma, so they can explore which best supports their long-term recovery goals.

Personalized Care in a Supportive Environment

With a 45-bed capacity and individualized treatment planning, we emphasize connection, accountability, and personalized attention without resort-style or luxury positioning.

Evidence-Based and Holistic Treatment Options

Programs incorporate evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused therapy, alongside experiential therapeutic approaches. Our holistic, expressive arts, and narrative therapies include yoga, art and music therapy, Conscious Recovery, and mindfulness practices.

Understanding the Effects of Benzodiazepine Misuse

Doctors prescribe benzodiazepines (called “benzos”) for a variety of reasons, such as anxiety and panic disorders, seizures, insomnia, and acute muscle spasms. However, chronic or excessive consumption of benzos can pave the path to dependency, entailing a series of potentially debilitating side effects, including difficulties in concentration, decision-making, memory, and problem-solving.

The effects of benzodiazepines also include fatigue, lack of coordination, depression, and anxiety. The importance of identifying benzodiazepine addiction and seeking treatment options can minimize the long-term side effects associated with benzodiazepines.

Types of Benzodiazepine Abuse We Treat

Benzodiazepines include multiple types that address specific symptoms, such as the following:

  • Diazepam (Valium): Used for anxiety, seizures, as a muscle relaxant, and as a sedative before certain medical procedures.
  • Alprazolam (Xanax): Offers rapid relief for anxiety and panic disorders; lasts for 4 to 6 hours and can sometimes lead to quicker addiction
  • Clonazepam (Klonopin): Used to treat seizure disorders, panic attacks, and other conditions requiring prolonged management.
  • Lorazepam (Ativan): Offers fast-acting treatment for anxiety and insomnia; differs from Xanax in that it is an intermediate-acting benzodiazepine, lasting between 6 and 8 hours.

Understanding how Xanax compares to other benzodiazepines, such as Ativan, Klonopin, and Valium, can help individuals and healthcare providers make informed decisions about its risks and appropriate use.

Highlights of Our California
Benzo Addiction Treatment Program

We champion an individualized approach to treatment that understands how withdrawal symptoms, personalized needs, and other unique nuances vary from one client to another.

Medically Supervised Benzodiazepine Detox

Detoxification (or detox) for benzodiazepine addiction centers on purging the body of the accumulated drug and providing medical support as the body readjusts to its absence under the vigilant eye of medical professionals. This initial withdrawal syndrome phase ensures that symptoms and cravings are managed and minimized, prioritizing the individual’s comfort and safety.

Similar to alcohol withdrawal, benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms can become life-threatening. A benzo taper – gradually reducing the dose of benzodiazepine medications – is the safest and most effective approach to detox to mitigate severe effects.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused Care

CBT aids individuals in recognizing, confronting, and altering detrimental thought patterns and behaviors that fuel their addiction.

Holistic and Experiential Therapies

We recognize the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Integrative therapies like yoga foster physical well-being, meditation aids in mental clarity, and nutrition counseling ensures the body receives optimal fuel for recovery.

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Planning

Recovery doesn’t conclude with the end of a treatment program. Our dedicated aftercare strategies, combined with tools and skills for relapse prevention, arm individuals with the resources to maintain lasting sobriety.

What Daily Life Looks Like
During Benzo Treatment

During treatment, individuals participate in structured therapeutic activities, regular check-ins with medical professionals, and close monitoring of withdrawal symptoms to support safety and comfort. Clients are encouraged to focus on rest, nutrition, hydration, and the development of healthy coping skills as they gradually adjust to life without benzodiazepines.

Morning Goals, Structure, and Wellness

Our program is rooted in a structured daily routine that includes a nutritious, expertly prepared breakfast at 8 am. Breakfast is followed by informal group therapy sessions that lead into more intense experiential therapy sessions and activities in the afternoon. Individual wellness options include yoga classes and deep breathing exercises.

Therapy Sessions and Clinical Programming

9 am therapy begins with a group session focused on setting a small, achievable daily goal. The day includes 5 to 7 group sessions (with lunch at 12 pm). Behavioral group therapies are combined with supportive, holistic treatments and once-weekly individual therapy sessions.

Experiential Therapy and Holistic Recovery Activities

Our team promotes emotional healing and personal growth through experiential therapy. Afternoon sessions include CBT, DBT, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and trauma-focused work. We also incorporate art, yoga, music, and Qigong to promote self-awareness and develop problem-solving skills, as well as psychodrama and hypnotherapy to help clients learn to break free from long-term behavior patterns.

Evening Reflection and Peer Support

The evening schedule includes dinner at 5 pm, along with ample time for individuals to reflect on their morning and process their afternoon group therapy sessions and activities.

Weekend Family Visits and Recovery Programming

We provide a weekly virtual family dynamics group on Wednesday evenings, focusing on education about treatment terms, levels of care, and how best to support loved ones. Both virtual and in-person couples and family therapy sessions may be initiated after week two, if desired.

Weekly on‑site family visits take place on Sundays from 10 am to 12 pm, with clinicians present to address conflicts and facilitate conversation. Special events include an Annual Friendsgiving as well as a formal graduation “last supper” ceremony, where clients receive congratulatory poker chips and graduation certificates.

Clinical programming includes medically monitored detox, individual and group therapy, dual-diagnosis treatment, and life skills development through a combination of clinical therapies with nutrition and wellness practices.

Signs It’s Time to Seek Treatment for Benzodiazepine Dependence

It may be time to seek treatment for benzodiazepine dependence if you find yourself needing higher doses to achieve the same effects, experiencing withdrawal symptoms between doses, or struggling to reduce or stop drug use despite negative impacts on your health, relationships, or daily life.

Signs of Benzodiazepine Dependence

Timely identification of benzodiazepine addiction can steer individuals toward substance use disorder treatment and recovery sooner, minimizing the health and social repercussions. Red flags to remain vigilant for include:

  • Increased tolerance
  • Inability to reduce or quit
  • Physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms
  • Excessive time spent focused on the drug
  • Neglecting personal, work, or relationship responsibilities
  • Continued, compulsive use despite known harm

Warning Signs of Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

The initial withdrawal phase of benzo use can include anxiety or panic attacks, insomnia, seizures, tremors, and nausea or vomiting.

When Withdrawal Symptoms Become Dangerous

Withdrawal symptoms during benzodiazepine detox can become dangerous if they include seizures, severe confusion, hallucinations, extreme agitation, or significant changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Because benzodiazepine withdrawal can be life-threatening in some cases, medical supervision is strongly recommended to ensure symptoms are monitored and managed safely.

Why Professional Detox Matters

Professional detox provides medical monitoring and individualized care to help manage withdrawal symptoms safely and reduce the risk of serious complications. A supervised detox program can also offer emotional support, medication management when appropriate, and a smoother transition into ongoing addiction treatment and recovery.

Benzodiazepine Tapering and Medical Supervision

Benzodiazepine tapering involves gradually reducing the medication dose over time to help minimize withdrawal symptoms and lower the risk of serious complications. Medical supervision is essential throughout the process, as healthcare professionals can monitor symptoms, adjust the tapering schedule when needed, and provide support to ensure the safest possible withdrawal experience.

Family Therapy and Weekly Family Education

Our treatment plans for benzodiazepine abuse consider the client’s family and loved ones. We offer weekly family-focused therapy to improve communication, heal relationships, and build trust.

Medication Management During Recovery

Medication management can play an important role in benzodiazepine addiction treatment by helping individuals safely navigate withdrawal and address symptoms of co-occurring mental health disorders. Throughout drug abuse treatment, medical providers monitor progress, adjust medications as needed, and ensure that any prescriptions support long-term wellness goals.

Careful oversight can help reduce the risk of relapse, reducing the risk of benzodiazepine overdose after a period of abstinence. Prescribing medication can also improve comfort and stability during treatment. Combined with therapy and other evidence-based interventions, medication management can support a more successful and sustainable recovery journey.

Step-Down Planning and Continued Support

We believe that our connection to clients doesn’t end when treatment concludes. In addition to step-down planning that starts on day one of treatment, our team believes individuals should receive continuous aftercare through support, accountability, and connection.

Our alumni programs foster ongoing relationships and a sense of community through check-ins, group meetings, and additional resources. Prioritizing meaningful connections allows clients to move forward with confidence and receive support during their recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Benzodiazepine addiction treatment lasts between 1 and 4 weeks, though the tapering period can last anywhere between 10 weeks and 12 months. At Align Recovery, treatment lasts approximately 30 to 60 days, with a typical stay of 30 days when factoring in 7 days of detox.

Yes, benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous. Benzodiazepines boost the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which slows activity in the central nervous system and produces a calming effect. However, long-term use causes the brain to adapt by down-regulating its own GABA receptors. Abruptly stopping benzos removes this artificial GABA enhancement, leading to severe hyperstimulation, rebound anxiety, and life-threatening seizures.

Other symptoms of rapid cessation include anxiety, panic, and high heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. For these reasons, it’s very important to detox from benzodiazepines under supervision from medically trained professionals

Yes, it’s possible to detox safely from Xanax. As with other benzodiazepine substance abuse, tapering the use of Xanax is the safest way to detox. Detox from Xanax is best done in a medically supervised environment.

Align Recovery’s inpatient detox program provides a comprehensive treatment plan for each individual with benzodiazepine addiction. Clients receive continuous care in a caring, supportive environment staffed by experienced medical professionals.

During benzodiazepine detox, physicians often use a carefully monitored tapering schedule with a longer-acting benzodiazepine to help reduce withdrawal symptoms and lower the risk of complications. Additional medications may be prescribed on an individual basis to address symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, nausea, or seizures, depending on the person’s needs and medical history.

Yes, Align Recovery Centers treats co-occurring mental health disorders, including anxiety, through dual diagnosis treatment to treat the root causes of substance abuse.

Yes, our 30-day residential treatment plans offer on-site group therapy sessions. We provide 5 to 7 group therapy sessions daily, in addition to weekly family-focused counseling.

Our Free Aftercare for Life program ensures that individuals receive continuous support, accountability, and a sense of connection after residential treatment ends. The alumni program is focused on building a community, complete with ongoing relationships that support long-term recovery.

Clients at Align can take part in regular Zoom meetings and use our private alumni app to find peer support, a safe space to connect, and recovery-focused content and resources for lasting sobriety.
