Safe, Medically Supervised Benzo Detox

Because benzodiazepines are associated with intense withdrawal symptoms, it’s key to undergo detox under medical supervision. When suddenly stopping benzodiazepines, serious complications can arise, including potentially dangerous physical symptoms.

Benzodiazepine withdrawal can become life-threatening without professional medical monitoring. Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, seizures, tremors, or nausea/vomiting. Medical detox that is supervised by a team of clinicians is a safe, supported way to move through the benzodiazepine withdrawal process and help prevent benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome from occurring.

Integrated Care for Substance Use and Mental Health

We recognize that clients in benzodiazepine detox often have co-occurring mental health conditions frequently tied to benzodiazepine addiction. These conditions may include anxiety, panic attacks, chronic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression. We begin the process of stabilizing mental health symptoms alongside withdrawal symptoms to help set the foundation for further treatment and recovery.

Personalized Detoxification and Tapering Plans

Our medically supervised benzodiazepine detox program uses tapering to gradually and safely reduce a client’s benzodiazepine dosage while under 24/7 medical supervision. Tapering helps prevent severe benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, by allowing the body to adjust to lower levels over time.

The tapering protocol used depends on whether clients are in detox for shorter- vs. longer-acting medications – short-acting medications can lead to more severe withdrawal symptoms. When clinically appropriate, Librium (chlordiazepoxide) tapering is used to taper clients gradually and help stabilize their withdrawal symptoms, often in combination with holistic care.

Individualized treatment plans are based on benzodiazepine use history, dosage, half-life, and physical dependence for each client.

A Comfortable and Supportive Detox Setting in California

Our substance abuse treatment facility is located in a historic stone building on 2+ acres of peaceful land. The accredited 45-bed residential facility includes many quiet spaces where clients can reflect, plus a large backyard, library, rec room, and a supportive clinical structure to accompany our family-style atmosphere. Our calm and grounding environment feels like a “second home” where clients can receive individualized attention and feel emotionally safe during the benzodiazepine detox process.

Program Highlights of Benzo Detox in California

Our benzo detox program provides 24/7 medical supervision, individualized tapering plans, medication-assisted symptom management, and compassionate clinical support to help clients withdraw safely and comfortably.

Individualized Tapering and Medication Support

Our detox program for benzodiazepines typically lasts 6-7 days, with 7 days preferred to ensure a smooth tapering process. Medically supervised detox programs provide 24/7 nursing care and medical oversight by board‑certified addiction specialists to stabilize withdrawal symptoms.

Common medications used for tapering include Valium (diazepam), Librium (chlordiazepoxide), and Klonopin (clonazepam). Other medications used include Gabapentin to reduce anxiety and prevent seizures, and Propranolol for symptoms such as rapid heart rate and tremors.

Dual Diagnosis Support During Detox

We offer dual diagnosis treatment that is integrated with our benzodiazepine detox for co-occurring mental health conditions associated with substance use disorder. Dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions includes depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic stress.

Group Therapy and Peer Connection

Peer connection is a central part of our philosophy. During detox treatment programs, clients can find support and connect with one another in group therapy through shared experiences in a collaborative environment focused on healing, reducing isolation, practicing community-building, and preventing relapse.

Long-Term Recovery Planning From Day One

Discharge planning begins during week one for clients upon admission into our detox program. Following detox, most clients transition into our residential treatment program.

Clients may then plan for step-down levels of care after detox and residential treatment. Step-down options include sober living environments (SLE), an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and referrals for clients to find placement in outpatient therapy.

Aftercare services post-detox consist of an assigned counselor,  use of our private, client-only app, ongoing group therapy, alumni events and reunions, and virtual/in-person family follow‑up.

What to Expect During Benzo Detox

During benzo detox, clients can expect continuous medical monitoring, a personalized tapering schedule when appropriate, and supportive care to help manage withdrawal symptoms safely throughout the process.

Mornings Focused on Stabilization and Goal Setting

Clients in benzodiazepine detox receive breakfast at 8 AM, followed by morning support groups focused on daily goal setting. Nursing check-ins, medication monitoring, and therapy preparation occur throughout the day to prioritize the safety, well-being, and comfort of clients.

Structured Therapy and Clinical Support Throughout the Day

We provide evidence-based, trauma-informed therapies during detox, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused groups, and individual therapy sessions. In addition, clients receive supportive life skills training, such as psychoeducation sessions to better understand the recovery journey and treatment terms to help prevent relapse.

Holistic and Experiential Recovery Activities

Experiential therapies and holistic activities include yoga, mindfulness-based CBT, art therapy, music therapy, Qigong, and stress management. Additional recreational activities include things as simple as playing a game of horseshoes, planting in our organic garden, watching a movie in the recreation room, or reading a book in the gazebo.

Evenings Centered on Reflection and Connection

We reserve evenings for clients to reflect on their day. It’s paramount for clients to be able to wind down safely during detox, which they can do through processing groups in the evening.

Weekend Family Support and Recovery Community

Weekly on-site family visits are held every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Family visits include clinicians who can manage potential conflicts and facilitate conversation between loved ones. Our co‑ed program also offers gender‑specific process groups every Saturday, including a men’s stag off‑site and a women’s process group in‑house.

Benzo Addiction and Withdrawal

Conditions We Treat

Our comprehensive detox program for benzodiazepine addiction includes personalized care for both short- and long-acting benzodiazepines. In addition, we treat the withdrawal symptoms associated with benzodiazepines, as well as polysubstance misuse and chronic and high-dose use.

Xanax, Ativan, and Other Short-Acting Benzodiazepines

We focus on using evidence-based therapies alongside holistic approaches to address the complex challenges of benzodiazepine addiction. Included in our detox programs for opioid use disorder is treatment for short-acting benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan).

Valium, Librium, and Longer-Acting Benzodiazepines

We also offer personalized, integrated care to treat addiction to longer-acting benzodiazepines, including diazepam (Valium) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium).

Because diazepam and chlordiazepoxide are longer-acting, they are often utilized for benzodiazepine tapering to prevent severe withdrawal. A tapering plan can be customized by our team of medical professionals to help avoid abrupt cessation and manage underlying symptoms.

Benzo Use Combined With Opioids or Alcohol

When benzodiazepines are combined with opioids or alcohol, there is an increased risk of life-threatening respiratory depression. Because of the medical complexities present, medically supervised detox is paramount to a safe and supported recovery.

Co-Occurring Anxiety and Mental Health Disorders

Mental health disorders that co-occur alongside substance use disorder include panic attacks, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and emotional dysregulation. We offer a dual diagnosis treatment program integrated with our detox and inpatient addiction treatment programs.

Chronic Benzo Dependence and High-Dose Use

Long-term use of benzodiazepines can lead to cravings, physical dependence, and failed attempts when individuals try to detox on their own. Using high doses of benzos can make withdrawal much harder due to a more intense rebound effect, including extreme anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and prolonged withdrawal symptoms known as benzodiazepine-induced neurological dysfunction (BIND).

Risks of Benzo Withdrawal and Why Medical Detox Matters

Withdrawal from benzodiazepines comes with physical and psychological risks. Safe, medically supervised detox is always recommended, along with options for tapering the use of benzodiazepines.

Signs It May Be Time for Professional Help

Key signs that it’s time to find professional help for benzodiazepine use disorder include:

  • Benzodiazepine use becomes more frequent
  • Needing higher doses to achieve the same calming effect
  • Experiencing sleep disturbances or rebound anxiety
  • Panic attacks occur between doses
  • Increased cravings and/or the inability to stop
  • Combining benzodiazepines with opioids or alcohol
  • Failed attempts to detox or taper from benzodiazepines alone

Understanding Benzo Withdrawal Symptoms

Suddenly reducing or stopping benzodiazepines can trigger both physical and psychological reactions. Common benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, tremors, nausea, insomnia, agitation, sensory sensitivity, elevated heart rate, and seizures.

Why Detoxing Alone Can Be Dangerous

Suddenly stopping benzodiazepines without medical supervision can lead to benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome (BWS), which occurs when the central nervous system becomes dependent on prolonged medication use. BWS can increase the risk of life-threatening physical and psychological reactions upon cessation.

Severe withdrawal symptoms include seizures, hypertension, and rebound symptoms, including insomnia, anxiety, and panic attacks, which require immediate medical intervention. Medically supervised detox is the safest way to treat benzodiazepine dependence.

Early Support Can Improve Long-Term Recovery

Addressing an addiction to benzodiazepines is not easy. Medical supervision, professional help, and individualized care are of utmost importance for a safe, supported withdrawal process. Our team can help guide you through every step of your benzodiazepine recovery process and beyond.

Additional Features of Our Benzo Detox Program

Our benzodiazepine detox program prioritizes family education and support throughout treatment, as well as early discharge and aftercare planning. Clients can count on aftercare for life, plus an alumni community to support the entire recovery journey.

Family Education
and Support

We’re committed to helping the family and loved ones of those experiencing benzodiazepine addiction better understand the roots of dependence and how to support those moving through detox and recovery.

Aftercare and Continuing Care Planning

Following detox, most clients move into our residential program. We also provide referrals for step‑down options following benzodiazepine detox. Referral options can consist of sober living environments (SLE), an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and outpatient therapy, as well as ongoing community support.

Alumni and Recovery Community Support

Clients who complete our programs continue to receive follow-up support through alumni events. These group activities foster a sense of community and continued accountability to help prevent relapse.

Healing Environment for Benzo Recovery in California

Benzodiazepines suppress the central nervous system (CNS), which means that sudden withdrawal can trigger rebound symptoms, stress, and seizures. Getting rest and allowing the nervous system to stabilize are important parts of a safe and supported detox process.

Our mission is to provide medically supervised care during detox and encourage clients to become a part of their own recovery. Choosing Align means that you won’t feel like “just a number.” We’re proud of our reputation as a “mom and pop” treatment facility with a professional, warm-hearted staff and a warm, home-like environment.

We believe that the most successful detox and recovery programs involve meaningful work supported by compassionate care, and we are prepared to offer that to all of our clients.

FAQs

How long does benzo detox take?

Detox from benzodiazepine abuse typically lasts around 10 days. However, mild symptoms can persist for one to six months, and even up to a year or more.

During detox, short-acting benzodiazepines, such as Xanax, are often replaced with longer-acting ones, such as diazepam or chlordiazepoxide, to create a smoother tapering process and help reduce withdrawal rebound symptoms.

Yes, insurance plans in California typically cover costs for benzodiazepine detox. Align Recovery Centers in Sonoma is a fully licensed and accredited addiction treatment facility. Reach out to verify your insurance and learn more about our detox and inpatient treatment programs.

During the benzodiazepine detox process, tapering occurs by gradually reducing the dose of benzodiazepines over time instead of stopping abruptly (“cold turkey”). Tapering allows the brain and central nervous system to safely readjust without the substance, which helps minimize the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Align Recovery’s medically supervised detox program employs the tapering process for safe, supported recovery.
