Our Levels of Care for Heroin Addiction Treatment

Our treatment program provides medically supervised detox, residential treatment, and ongoing virtual support to adults struggling with heroin use, opioid use disorder, and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Medically Supervised Detox for Heroin Withdrawal

Our medically-assisted detox program offers 24/7 nursing care and medical oversight. The duration of detox is 6-7 days to provide a stabilization window, depending on the client’s needs.

Medical detox helps maintain and manage withdrawal symptoms for heroin and other substances. Withdrawal symptoms may include cravings, anxiety, depression, fatigue, irritability, sleep disruption, and flu-like symptoms.

Programs include medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using approved medications such as buprenorphine (Suboxone), methadone as needed, and naltrexone planning, along with adjunct medication, including clonidine for anti-nausea and sleep support.

Drug detox clients also receive psychiatric support and individualized detox planning focused on stabilization so they can easily transition to residential care.

Residential Treatment for Heroin Addiction

Once medically-supervised detox is complete, clients receive personalized, integrated care through residential treatment. A core level of care at Align Recovery, residential treatment lasts 30-60 days (approximately 30 days on average).

Programs include a structured daily schedule with 5-7 groups per day. Therapeutic approaches used throughout treatment include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Conscious Recovery, and motivational interviewing (MI).

Our trauma-focused therapeutic approach addresses addiction as well as co-occurring mental health disorders. Therapy groups focus on psychoeducation, relapse prevention, and accountability. Along with evidence-based therapies, our individualized care plans provide experiential and holistic care, such as yoga, art, music, and mindfulness activities.

Virtual Therapy and Continued Clinical Support

Our program also uses a therapy‑forward, evidence‑based, hybrid model that includes both on-site and virtual therapy. We offer continued care for our clients in recovery, including virtual psychiatry services and therapy sessions, along with a weekly virtual family dynamics group to connect with loved ones.

Alumni have access to check-ins and recovery support groups, as well as aftercare planning. Step-down coordination starts on day one of treatment. Options include outpatient referrals, sober living placement support, and continued therapy planning as part of our aftercare for life program.

Daily Life in Heroin Addiction Treatment

A structured treatment environment provides consistency, accountability, and stability, helping clients establish healthy routines and focus fully on their recovery.

Morning Structure and Clinical Foundations

After breakfast at 8 AM, clients can attend a morning goals group, where they set a small, achievable goal for the day. They also receive medication support as needed throughout the day.

Afternoon Therapy and Skill Building

After 12 PM lunch, clients spend their afternoon attending CBT and DBT groups. They also attend additional trauma-focused therapy groups and psychoeducation information sessions, while taking part in holistic activities, such as yoga, exercise, meditation, or gardening.

Evening Reflection and Peer Support

Evenings include dinner at 5 PM, plus group processing where clients can work on recovery community building and reflect on their day. Align Recovery has many serene, private spaces in our facility’s historical stone building where clients can spend time alone, including a large backyard, library, recreation room, and private quiet rooms.

Weekly Rhythm and Family Involvement

Virtual family dynamics group takes place weekly on Wednesday evenings, which includes education on treatment terms and levels of care, such as SLE (sober living environment), IOP (intensive outpatient program), and PHP (partial hospitalization program), to help family members learn how to support their loved ones.

Virtual and in‑person family and couples therapy sessions also take place after week two if desired. Experiential outings such as art, writing, adventure, and equine therapy encourage clients to explore their emotions, beliefs, and behaviors in a safe and supportive environment.

Treatment Options and Therapies Used for Opioid Use Disorder

Our programs provide medically-assisted detox that includes medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and inpatient care. We focus on evidence-based therapies that address heroin use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions through a dual diagnosis approach to treatment.

Evidence-Based Behavioral Therapies

Throughout treatment, clients take part in evidence-based therapies, including CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and Conscious Recovery. These therapies address addiction, underlying mental health issues, and help prevent relapse.

CBT helps clients identify harmful thought patterns and develop coping strategies that foster long-term recovery. DBT combines elements of CBT with mindfulness practices, acceptance, and dialectics. Motivational Interviewing therapy helps clients explore their goals and reasons for healing. Conscious Recovery addresses the root causes of addiction in addition to the symptoms.

Integrated Mental Health Care

We believe addiction is an expression of co‑occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic stress. By treating the root cause of addiction in dual diagnosis treatment, we help clients prevent relapse and support lasting success.

When to Seek Help for Heroin Addiction

Recognizing the warning signs of heroin misuse is key when seeking help for addiction, which may include several indicators.

Behavioral and Physical Warning Signs

The effects of opioids such as heroin can be quite powerful. This is due to heroin not being a long-acting opioid; instead, it leaves the body quickly.

Key physical and behavioral signs of heroin use disorder include:

  • Loss of control, including uncontrollable leg or arm movements
  • Intense cravings
  • Feelings of isolation
  • Financial or legal issues
  • Increased risk of infectious diseases, such as hepatitis, due to the sharing or reusing of injectable equipment.
  • Withdrawal symptoms, including muscle pain, vomiting/diarrhea, increased heart rate, sweating, and goosebumps

Health and Safety Risks

Continued heroin misuse can lead to life-threatening concerns, including an increased risk of overdose, exposure to fentanyl, and infectious disease. Heroin overdose can lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain, leading to coma and death. Getting professional help from an accredited treatment facility for heroin misuse is key to lasting healing.

Why Early Treatment Improves Outcomes

Getting treatment for heroin use disorder early on prevents escalation of use, supports stabilization during the detox process, and improves long-term recovery outcomes and the well-being of clients.

Support Services for Ongoing Addiction Recovery

Our team offers ongoing support services to clients during and after detox and residential treatment, including personalized aftercare plans to help prevent relapse. Aftercare plans include family therapy and continuing education, long-term recovery planning from day one, and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ clients.

Family Therapy and Education

A weekly virtual family dynamics group educates loved ones about treatment terms, levels of care (SLE, IOP, PHP), and how to best support their loved ones. We also offer couples and family therapy sessions both virtually and in‑person.

Aftercare and Long-Term Recovery Planning

Structured step-down planning includes assistance with sober living placement, as well as referrals for ongoing treatment such as IOP, PHP, and outpatient therapy. Clients also receive an assigned counselor, a client-only app for follow‑up, group therapy, alumni events/reunions, family follow‑up, and continued recovery check-ins.

LGBTQ+ Affirming and Inclusive Care

Our team offers flexible, client‑choice recovery pathways and gender‑specific processing when needed, while remaining LGBTQ+ affirming through our supportive, individualized care and environment.

FAQs

What is the first step in heroin addiction treatment?

Detoxification under medical supervision is the first step in treatment for heroin addiction. Detox safely clears any substances from the body while helping to manage withdrawal symptoms safely.

However, treating physical dependence is only a short-term solution for addiction to an opiate. Inpatient treatment programs are the best long-term option to help individuals experiencing substance abuse stay on the path to long-term recovery.

Before detox, interventions are also a helpful way for loved ones with heroin misuse to recognize their addiction. In some cases, contingency management through continued drug tests rewards individuals to reinforce a drug-free lifestyle.

Heroin detox lasts approximately 4 to 10 days. Typically, withdrawal symptoms begin 8 to 24 hours after stopping the substance and peak between 48 and 72 hours. Opioid withdrawal syndrome is linked to substances used to manage pain, including morphine, heroin, OxyContin, codeine, methadone, and hydromorphone. The safest kind of treatment includes both medical detox and evidence-based inpatient treatment.

Suboxone is a partial opioid agonist containing buprenorphine and naloxone, which activates the brain’s opioid receptors without producing the same high as heroin. Buprenorphine and naloxone are FDA-approved medications that can help individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms and short-term effects of heroin addiction, such as cravings.

Align Recovery Center’s medical detox program provides 24/7 nursing care and medical oversight by board‑certified psychiatry, neurology, and addiction medicine specialists. Our team also administers an N‑Acetyl L‑Cysteine supplement + Lucemyra (lofexidine) prescription medication early to reduce withdrawal risk before initiating Suboxone, to avoid precipitated withdrawal.

Yes, California health insurance covers heroin addiction treatment, per the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA requires most health plans to pay for treatment for drug use. Medi-Cal and the Medicaid program in California also cover treatment for qualifying low-income residents.

Align Recovery Centers accepts various types of major insurance plans. Verify your insurance by calling our admissions team today and explore your treatment options for heroin addiction.
